When asked who Neymar Jr is, the answer you get is that he is a Brazilian professional footballer, who plays as a striker for the national team and the French club Paris Saint-Germain. He is considered one of the best players of his generation due to his eye-catching skills and series of BALLOON D'OR nominations. But only a few football fans know about his journey to reach his successful position. He faced many problems in his life due to the poverty around him to become the most expensive player in the world. This is the life story of Neymar Jr, who has made a name for both his country and his club.

 

 

History of Neymar's childhood

Neymar da Silva Santos Junior was born on February 5, 1992 to his father Neymar Santos and mother Nadine Goncalves in Mogi Das Cruzes. He grew up in a low-quality neighborhood that was filled with high crime, low income, and drug use. He is the first child and the boy of two children.

 

They lived a life of poverty due to low income and during pregnancy, the family could not afford an ultrasound scan to check the baby's development. His father was a player at the bottom of the São Paulo soccer league, so he couldn't earn much money for the family. Neymar entered the local school in São Paulo and studied with street students.

 

Due to some injuries in an accident, his father suffered a fracture in his hip bone and that is why he stopped playing football. This resulted in extreme difficulty. They couldn't afford to pay the electricity bill and most of the time the family lived by candlelight. The family had no choice but to move to Neymar's grandfather's house and had to stay in a room sharing a single mattress.

In 2009, Neymar entered the Santos first team, played 43 times, scored 13 goals and was named 2009 State League Rookie of the Year.

In 2011, Neymar helped Santos successfully defend the state league championship. On June 22, in the second round of the Copa Libertadores final, Neymar scored his sixth goal of the tournament, helping the team beat Peñarol 2–1 at home and regain the championship after 48 years. That same year, Neymar was chosen Best New Star 2011 by the British football magazine “World Football”, and won the 2011 Puskas Award, the Brazilian Ballon d'Or, the Brazilian Footballer of the Year and the South American Footballer of the year.

 Neymar signed a five-year contract with Barcelona. Neymar was officially presented on June 3, 2013 by Barcelona after passing a medical examination and signing the contract that would keep him at the Camp Nou until June 2018. Neymar was present at the Barcelona stadium with a record attendance of 56,500 fans. for a Brazilian player.

 

Neymar had a successful campaign with Barcelona, forging an attacking trio with teammates Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi, nicknamed “MSN,” an acronym for  Messi ,  Suárez  and Neymar.

 

During his time at Barcelona, Neymar emerged as one of the three finalists for the 2015 FIFA Ballon d'Or alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, in which he came third. The attacking trio that Neymar forged with his teammates proved to be beneficial for Barcelona and Neymar's career, as the trio finished the 2015 season with 122 goals and surpassed the 2016 campaign with 131 goals.

On August 3, 2017, Neymar surprised the world with his €222 million transfer to French giants Paris Saint-Germain. The transfer ran into a number of problems as Barcelona requested payment of club bonuses, damages worth €8.5 million and 10% arrears. PSG was requested to pay the aforementioned fees. Despite all this, Neymar made his debut for PSG and continued his successful form. He formed a new attacking trio with his teammates Kylian Mbappe and Edison Cavani. Unfortunately, it was later revealed that Neymar was suspected of not getting along with Mbappe and his career in Paris was soon over.

On August 16, 2023, Riyadh Crescent Football Club officially announced the signing of Neymar, with a contract until June 2025. According to statistics on the German transfer market website, the transfer amount amounts to 90 million euros. At this point, Neymar's accumulated transfers in his playing career have exceeded 400 million euros, making him the player with the highest accumulated transfers in football history, breaking Lukaku's record.

On September 19, in the first round of Group D of the AFC Champions League, Neymar made his AFC Champions League debut and helped the team to a 1–1 draw at home against Namangan New Year. Unfortunately, on October 19, Riyadh Crescent officially announced that Neymar had torn his ACL and meniscus, and his recovery time has yet to be determined.
